Step #1 for identifying inquiry focus for 2022

Unpacking and analysing last year's assessment data in week 5 of Term 1 2022

was essential when the school realised that we cannot collect assessment data

quickly for this year. Omicron has controlled the first half of this term. Students

were not attending school for various reasons and so assessment planned to happen

in week 4 & 5 was also not happening.

In term 4 last year, teachers agreed to collect data during CoVid lockdowns.

Data we collected were called CoVid OTJ which means they were based on

teachers' observations, annecdotal notes on learning behaviour and work provided by

students during online learning.

I am teaching years 0&1 this year and most of my students are new entrants, only four are students from last year. And because of that, I decided to collect my own data about my learners. I am currenty testing and collecting information about them.

My main concern or focus is on phonic awareness as I know from previous years that this has always been a concern. In addition to that is the words recognition. I will be testing my learners on their phonics and word recognition ability to get some data before making a statement about my inquiry focus.

BSLA (Better Start Literacy Approach) is an approach that we started last year but was disturbed by CoVid and would like to use it's assessment to support me of course with observations to collect my data. I will be using 'Early Word' approach to collect information on word recognition.
