I attended a PD on play-based learning provided by Longworth Education.
I wanted to learn more about play-based pedagogy and its philosophy.

I wanted to have some ideas before setting up a play-based classroom.
Here are some notes that I have taken which I think they are important to consider especially
if you are teaching or working with young children.

What the research tells us about the role of play? (Gray, 2013; Brewer, 2007)
- develops a healthy development of all aspects of learning - physical, sensorimotor, social, emotional, and cognitive.
- engaged in authentic play develops higher order cognitive and socio-emotional skills
- behavioural developmental practice
The power of ‘conversation’ in a play-based environment (how?)
- More opportunities for conversations - less teacher talk - more peer talk
- All are seen as learners (teachers included)
- The amount of talk that students directly correlates with their achievement.
For me, my next step is to use this “Student Developmental Continuum” to reflect/learn more
And also understanding these “stages of play” would help teachers know their learners more. Some learners
come to school showing behaviours of a 2 years old. This table defines what each age group
show when playing or interacting with others.
about my learners by identifying which continuum that my learners are at.

How are teachers going to plan / or use these ideas in their planning in order for young learners to
achieve all the benefits they should be getting through play?
